In 1987, the stock market swelled, scandal reigned and pop music turned a blind eye. 1987 saw heavy metal go light... and hip hop go white. In a sea of party rap and peroxide pop, music critics finally found their saviors. Then, black monday signaled a sobering end to america's lost weekend. 1987 was a year that saw the rise of the Hair Bands, the comeback of The Grateful Dead and the marriage of music and politics exemplified by bands such as U2 and R.E.M.
